TARA'S DOWRY
AND THE BEGINNING OF CANONDALE

In 1968, when Phil & I married, Fran & Watson Pugh gave us a weanling colt as a wedding gift. We named him Tara's Dowry. Dowry became one of the top park horses of his day, excelling in Amateur & Ladies Saddle and Harness classes. He was the beginning of Canondale Farm.
Soon after marriage, Phil was hired by the Univ. of NC at Chapel Hill to develop and head a genetics division in their pediatrics department. After 13 years there, he opened his own private full service genetics clinic which has grown from an original staff of four to a business of 50 employees.
Betsy began riding at age 7 and never outgrew her love of horses. When 15, she was introduced to the Morgan horse and has since served in many leadership positions in the VC Morgan Horse Club from newsletter editor to club president. Trained as a vocalist, Betsy is enjoying spending more time singing now, particularly enjoying Lieder recitals. Often these days at horse shows she can be heard singing the National Anthem.
